Japanese words used by AKB48 fans

I thought I'd prepare this video as a kind of a start into a series of informal Japanese lessons.  I've been studying Japanese for a very long time now.  And while I'm nowhere near fluent, there are a lot of Japanese-related things that I enjoy, and that I want to share.

This first lesson should be enjoyable for AK48 fans.  I present a set of pseudo-slang words often used by fans of AKB48.  Although I had my cards out, I had the game sitting around so there would be something more interesting to look at ^_^;

The words present in the video are:

  • 推しメン → oshimen → your favorite member, or the member of AKB48 that you support the most
  • 単推し → tan-oshi → Similar to oshimen except that it means you only support ONE member
  • 神推し、激推し → kami-oshi, geki-oshi → Similar to tan-oshi, excep taken to the extreme.  I read online that people who have kami-oshis usually support the one member, and ignore all the others
  • 二推し → ni-oshi → your second runner up, after your oshimen
  • 三推し → san-oshi → The third runner up.  It seems that if you have a second and third favorite, these two phrases are often used.  I have never heard of 四推し(4th place), however.
  • 応援する → ouen-suru → to support!  This isn't strictly a word that is only used in the context of talking about AKB48, but something that might be heard more often than not.
That's all for now!
